I Think of You Tonight

I think of you tonight, my little one

Of your soft baby breath rustling across my breast

With each creak of the rocker

Of your tiny fists tight against my chest

And the slight motion of your head back and forth

As you nestle against me

That dark tuft of hair always surprises me—

Your features are so fine

You curl up, resting your feet so gingerly on my belly

As though you really haven’t come yet

I think of you tonight my little one

As I watch the moon rising over the field

And know that—so far away—

That moon is already high in the sky and

Casting its silvery glow over you and the precious babe snuggled beside you

Your soft breath mingling with hers

As you sweetly dream together
